We caught up with designer Stacy Garcia by phone and chatted a bit about her design philosophy and her new shade designs on LampsPlus.com.
1. You’re known for your colorful and innovative hospitality industry designs. Is there a lot of difference between designing for the industry and designing for consumers?
There has been a lot of overlap between residential design and hospitality design over the last few years. The lines that had previously distinguished these markets have become blurry. Consumers are traveling and getting inspired by the hotels they are staying in and they are incorporating those looks into their homes. At the same time, Hotel designers are being challenged to bring the comforts of home into the hotel guest room. As a product designer I can create designs that are acceptable in both markets. The one distinguishing factor is color. In this collection we had some fun and added colors that would appeal to the “Tween” consumer as well as a more mature purchaser.
2. What’s your biggest inspiration for your work?
As an artist, I find inspiration everywhere, although nature, architecture, and pop culture continue to be some of my ongoing muses. For instance, the Dahlia pattern takes the simplicity of an organic petal and repeats it into a very attractive graphic statement. In this busy world and with people living such hyper connected lifestyles, it is important to take time to notice all the beauty that surrounds us.
3. Share with us your favorite inside color tip or trend
One of my favorite design tips is to include the unexpected. If you work with a neutral or monochromatic background add a pop of color into your accessories. This adds personality to the room and keeps it visually exciting by adding an element of surprise. Accessories are also an inexpensive way to change mood of a room.
